Parent FAQ
Questions, answered plainly.
What is free, what is ours, what is ready and how grown-ups stay in charge. If something here is unclear, ask us.
Free and original
What is free here?
The Free Library holds public-domain and openly licensed books, and the games, Puzzle World, Calm Corner and Reader Lab are free. None of these need an account or payment.
What are the original books?
The Adventures of Deuce and Friends is our own original collection, made separately from the free licensed books. Available formats are labeled on each book; titles without a released format say Coming Soon. Membership opens eligible original formats, while free books stay free.
Do I have to pay for anything today?
The Free Library, games, Puzzle World, Calm Corner and Reader Lab need no membership or payment. For current membership details, see the For parents page.
Look, Listen and Read
Does every book come in all three formats?
Not necessarily. Look (illustrated video), Listen (narration) and Read (pages) are each released independently, when that format is finished and reviewed. A book may have only one or two. Each book page shows which formats are actually ready; we do not mark a format available until it is.
Can free library books be listened to or watched?
Free Library books can include illustrated reading pages. Audio or video appears on a book's page only when that format is available with its own source and rights notice. More free sources also links to illustrated editions and separate audiobooks on other sites; those recordings are not synchronized to our pages.
Accounts and controls
Who holds the account?
Accounts are for grown-ups only and require a verified email. Children do not have their own logins.
What is the parent PIN for?
After signing in, a grown-up sets a private parent PIN. The Parent Hub, membership and other grown-up areas ask for it, so a child using the same device cannot open them by accident. Keep the PIN to yourself.
Can my child buy something?
Children have no purchase controls. Any billing, gifting or spending of family stars happens in grown-up areas behind sign-in and the parent PIN, with confirmation before anything is spent.
Privacy and rights
What kinds of information are involved?
Examples include your grown-up account, finished-book progress used for family stars, rewards and any message you send us. This is not a complete list. There is no public chat, and signing up does not add you to a newsletter.
Does Reader Lab save my child's writing?
No. The Writing Desk stays in the browser page and is never uploaded. If it is not downloaded, it is gone when the page closes.
Why is a free book unavailable where I live?
Copyright terms differ between countries. A book that is public domain in one territory may still be protected in another, so some editions are only offered in territories where we have confirmed they are free to share. Each book shows its source and rights notice. These are our own checks, not a legal certification.
